Ruma Guha Thakurta, Kishore Kumar’s First Wife Passes Away At 84
Kishore Kumar's first wife, Ruma Guha Thakurta passed away in her sleep on Monday morning
Veteran Bengali actress Ruma Guha Thakurta, also the first wife of Kishore Kumar passed away in her sleep at her Calcutta house, early on Monday. She was 84. The funeral will take place in Kolkata this evening. Ruma was suffering from old age related ailments. She is survived by her two children, singer Amit Kumar and a daughter from two marriages.
Ruma was born in Kolkata in 1934. The actress was married to Kishore Kumar from 1950-1958. They had a son together, named Amit. Then, she went on to marry writer-director Arup Guhathakurta and had two children, singers Sromona and Ayan Guha Thakurta.
West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee mourned over the actress’ death on Twitter by writing, "Saddened at the passing away of Ruma Guha Thakurta. Her contribution to the field of cinema and music will always be remembered. My condolences to her family and her admirers."

Ruma was the niece of veteran filmmaker Satyajit Ray and she made her film debut with Jwar Bhatia in 1944. She founded the Calcutta Youth Choir in 1958, a song and dance troupe, in 1958, which is known for its performance of folk and mass songs.. Not just in Hindi movies, Ruma was a well-known face even in Bengali cinema. With films like Ganga, Abhijaan, Palatak, Antony Firingee, Balika Badhu, Dadar Kirti, 36 Chowringhee Lane, Bhalobasa Bhalobasa and Wheelchair, the actress made her mark. She even worked as playback singer in several films.
